Refractive Errors
Normal
All the light that reaches the eye falls directly onto the retina (the back of the eye).
Nearsightedness (Myopia)
This occurs when the curvature of the cornea (front surface of the eye) is too steep. This causes the light that reaches the eye to focus short of the retina, causing poor distance vision.
Farsightedness (Hyperopia)
This occurs when the curvature of the cornea is too flat, causing the light to focus beyond the retina. This results in poor near vision and sometimes poor distance vision as well.
Astigmatism
This occurs when the curvature of the cornea is steeper in one direction than the other. This causes the light to focus on more than one point on the retina. This results in blurry and distorted vision.
