CustomVue Technology
The Fingerprint of Your Vision
Your vision is unique - as personal as your fingerprint or your DNA. WaveScan technology provides your eye doctor with a map of your eye.
WaveScan Technology
Initially you will meet with your eye doctor for a complete medical evaluation and eye history to determine whether you are a good candidate for the CustomVue procedure. Your doctor will discuss the benefits and risks of the procedure with you. A WaveScan measurement will be taken to map the unique characteristics of your eye. With this map, your doctor will be able to:
- Accurately assess whether you're a good candidate for laser vision correction. Anyone who is considering laser vision correction should obtain a WaveScan measurement as the first step.
- Along with the other diagnostic tests that your doctor performs, an individualized treatment plan can then be developed to address your unique vision needs.
Once it is confirmed that you are a good candidate, your doctor will schedule you for a CustomVue procedure. Your doctor will provide details to you on how to prepare for the day of the procedure.
The WaveScan WaveFront System is an ophthalmic diagnostic instrument that measures the refractive error and wavefront aberrations of the human eye using a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor. The measurements can be used to determine regular (sphero-cylindrical) refractive errors and irregularities (aberrations) that cause decreased or blurry vision in the human eye. The WaveScan software uses the information to create a custom tailored correction map for the unique characteristics of each individual eye.
WaveScan® technology was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. This advanced technology is now used to measure a person’s vision to a level of precision not previously possible. The WaveScan system is 25 times more precise for measuring visual imperfections than the technology commonly used to prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses.
“The WaveScan system measures the eye and produces a detailed map. Then, the digital information is transferred directly to the STAR S4™ Excimer Laser System for correction,” explains Dr. Choe. “This technology provides a high level of precision and accuracy for optimizing each patient’s vision based on their specific needs.”
Until now, eye doctors were forced to practice one-size-fits-all vision. An off-the-shelf lens can correct your vision fairly well, but it is not uniquely tailored to your fingerprint of vision. Now, with WaveScan technology, your eye doctor can custom tailor a correction for the unique characteristics of your vision.
The WaveScan WaveFront System provides:
- Fourier-based wavefront algorithms:
- Fourier delivers the highest resolution available of the wavefront error
- Uses more data points to derive the optimal shape
- Uses all data from any shape of pupil
- Accurately reconstructs all peripheral data
- Captures and treats higher and lower order aberrations up to 7 mm diameter pupil
- Acuity Maps®: Chart the optical aberrations of the eye.
- Difference Maps: Track the changes of the eye for pre-op and post-op comparisons.
- Point Spread Function (PSF): Demonstrates how a patient would see a point source of light
